ABOUT
JOY-FILLED, MISSION-MINDED, FUTURE-FOCUSED
Why even attend a particular church?
Sometimes location matters the most. And if that is the case, and if you are in Lochhaven, Larchmont, or Norfolk in general, or if you are near the Norfolk Naval Base, Old Dominion University, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Terminal Boulevard, or Hampton Boulevard, you may have driven past Second Presbyterian and not even noticed us. That said, most of our congregation drives in from further away.
Second Presbyterian was founded in 1872, so we’ve been around for more than 150 years. Back in the 1870s, when we were at our first church location—currently the site of the Freemason Abbey Restaurant—the newspapers referred to us as “the friendly church.”
Joy-filled
is one term that still characterizes us. We started as a mission church–a church plant–from First Presbyterian Church, and a second term that has come to characterize us is
mission-minded.
We are involved in the community in all sorts of hands-on ministries that address issues of hunger and shelter. We have twelve mission partners, including ForKids, St. Columba, and the Norfolk Street Choir Project. When we moved to our second location–currently the Hague School, formerly the Unitarian Church–across from the Chrysler Museum of Art, our international mission focus became well known with one of our missionaries having been the first person to translate the Bible into Korean.
We have sought to be a future-focused congregation.
Since 1960 we have been at our location on Hampton Boulevard. If you visit us, you’ll find that we have diverse and meaningful music, engaged bulletins, and both fun and meaningful fellowship hours after church.
All of that can be superficial.
Most importantly, what you’ll find is people who want to grow in their faith, who find that they can do so in a family atmosphere with caring, joy-filled, mission-minded, and future-focused people. You’ll find a place where people are comfortable asking questions, where people enjoy seeing how the Bible shapes them, and where they understand grace and Second chances.
