The Session
The Session consists of the Pastor and twelve ordained elders - both men and women - elected by the congregation. Each elder serves a three-year term of office. The Pastor serves as the Moderator of the Session, which oversees the mission and governance of the local church.
- The responsibilities of the session include, but are not limited to:
- Equipping members to be effective witnesses in word and deed to the saving grace of Jesus Christ;
- Leading the congregation in the mission of the whole Church in the world;
- Providing for the worship of the people of God, including preaching the Word, sharing the sacraments, and encouraging its music program;
- Challenging
the people of God with the privilege of responsible
Christian stewardship of money, time and talent;
- Establishing and monitoring the annual budget;
- Delegating the work of the church to various committees and taskforces;
- Providing for the administration of the church's programs and staff;
- Managing the church's property and facilities;
- Working cooperatively with other Presbyterians and ecumenical partners; and
- Keeping an accurate roll of the membership of the church.
The
Moderator, an ordained pastor designated by the Presbytery of Eastern
Virginia, presides at all Session meetings, insuring
that the Session's work is done decently
and in order.
